British Open History

Learn about the British Open History.

The British Open is the oldest of the four major championships in professional golf and the only one to be held outside of the United States.  For 150 years, the British Open has been held at a handful of choice golf courses in England, Scotland, and once in Ireland.

British Open History was made on October 17th, 1860 at Prestwick Golf Club in Scotland.  During that first year, the tournament was open only to professionals.  The following year the British Open was opened to amateurs.  Over the years, golf was standardized and the British Open came to resemble what we know today.
